Solutions > xml publishing

XML [eXtensible Markup Language] is rapidly becoming the new standard for data interchange and e-commerce. Embedding printer specific codes in mainfame applications makes them time-consuming to convert when investing in new printers. Using raw data such as XML provides complete flexibility in future document handling.

RedTitan are experts in database printing and e-publishing and are actively developing XML strategies in this area.

Extract data from documents to XML
Using EscapeE, the PCL Viewer and Transform tool, data can be stripped out from PCL files into XML format. EscapeE shows the PCL document on screen and users simply draw round an area of the page to define the fields and then select 'XML' as the export format.

A PCL file is any document printed ‘to file’ from a Windows application using a PCL-compatible print driver. This means that EscapeE can convert data from any format, from documents produced with any Windows application. Users with datastreams designed for Xerox centralised printers can also take advantage of EscapeE's capabilities by using the RedTitan Legacy Migration System to convert a Xerox datastream into PCL first.

Convert R/3 raw data to XML
RedTitan also handles raw data, including output from ERP [enterprise resource planning applications]. Our R/3 converter simply takes the raw data interface (RDI) from SAP R/3 applications and converts it to XML.

Publish XML in electronic documents
When exporting PCL to XML in Escapee, users can automatically generate all the files need for electonric document publishing: an XSL stylesheet defining the fields; a CSS (cascading stylesheet) defining the positions of the fields on the page; and an HTML file which ties these files together with the XML file.

Publish XML in dynamic printed documents
All RedTitan’s database publishing applications are now XML-data compatible, so XML data can be dynamically merged and published using RedTitan’s WYSIWYG page design and composition tools.

Templates for the static content of documents are prepared on the Windows PC using the WYSIWYG Document Design System. The XML variable data output is then formatted and dynamically merged with the templates by the Dynamic Document Formatter. This creates output in a range of languages that cover all commonly used printing platforms: Metacode (e.g. Xerox line printers), PostScript (e.g. Xerox DocuPrint/Tech/Color, IBM, Oce) or PCL (e.g. Hewlett-Packard and compatibles). Output is sent straight to the printer or spooler for printing at full production speeds.

A subset of the long-standing SGML (Standardised General Markup Language), XML is a cousin of the HTML (HyperText Markup Language) used for publishing documents in browsers and on the world wide web. But while HTML only describes how to display a document, XML describes the content. The advantage of XML over other data formats is that it is a text-based markup system that can be read on any platform.
