Ultra Electronics Controls Division is a West London based company that designs and manufactures electronic control systems for the aerospace and defence industries. Ultra is noted for its innovative technology and was recently granted a Millennium Product award for a revolutionary new product. RedTitan has helped them format the output from their manufacturing systems package into the full range of printed documents.

RedTitan improves document presentation from manufacturing systems package

Having invested in the Visibility enterprise resource planning (ERP) package to manage their complete manufacturing process, Ultra Electronics wanted to streamline their printed output as well. Work was often duplicated as jobs were retyped or reformatted for different specifications and special stationery was needed for each document. With high quality products and important customers in the aerospace industry, Ultra wanted excellent standards of presentation for all their documents.

The corporate database is Oracle running on an HP9000 UNIX host. RedTitan takes the ASCII file output from the Visibility system and formats it into any type of document. The output is sent to any of the PCL printers on the network, ranging from Hewlett-Packard HP3, LaserJet6 to HP8000.

Ultra no longer need to have separate preprinted forms for each job. So despatch notes, invoices, purchase orders, items listings — even cheque printing — can all be output straight to plain paper. The Dynamic Document Formatter takes care of all the formatting. They now have a uniform look and feel to all the paper that customers see.

Shaun Holliday, Visibility Support Manager at Ultra Electronics loves the reliability and simplicity of the RedTitan system:

Future plans include cutting out some of the paper stages altogether so that, for example, purchase notes can be output direct to fax.

ERP solutions have revolutionised the working environment for manufacturing companies. But, like Ultra Electronics, many RedTitan customers find that their ERP software does everything they want except sophisticated formatting for print.
